George Wilcox Peavy was born 12 November 1869 in Howell, Michigan. He received his Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts at the University of Michigan. He obtained his Master of Science degree in Forestry at his alma mater. Walter Fraser McCulloch joined the faculty of the Oregon State College School of Forestry in 1937. He left Oregon State briefly during World War II to serve as assistant state forester; during this time he developed and administered Oregon's Forest Conservation Act. The first forestry class was taught at OSU in 1896 and ten years later the first four-year degree program was established.
